Glossary
Batch
A grouped execution of work that applies a workflow to one or more samples.
Batches manage scheduling, protocol execution, shared timelines, and compliance tracking.
Batch Sample
A planned sample instance generated when a batch is created.
Each batch sample becomes an individually tracked sample while retaining batch-level context.
Sample
An individual biological unit tracked across its full lifecycle, including state changes, protocol execution, events, files, and compliance requirements.
Protocol
A reproducible laboratory procedure composed of ordered steps with defined instructions, timing rules, conditions, tools, and ingredients.
Protocol Step
A single executable unit within a protocol, defining what action to perform, under what conditions, and for how long.
Workflow
An ordered composition of protocols that defines a complete experimental or operational process applied to batches and samples.
Domain
A high-level classification that scopes workflows, protocols, and samples.
Examples include tissue culture, mushroom cultivation, and agrobacterium workflows.
Compliance Framework
A regulatory or internal standard (e.g. BSL, NIH, GMP, internal SOPs) that defines compliance requirements, checklists, authorization rules, and audit history.
Compliance Checklist
A collection of required compliance items that must be verified for a specific entity type, such as a protocol, batch, or sample.
Checklist Scope
A set of conditions that determines when a compliance checklist applies, based on factors such as domain, biosafety level, protocol action, or required materials.
Compliance Event
A record of an operational incident, deviation, near miss, violation, or corrective action that occurred during laboratory work and affects compliance or quality.
Compliance Audit
A formal review conducted against a compliance framework, recording scope, auditor, findings, and outcome.
Audit Log
An immutable, append-only record of all significant system actions, including who performed the action, what entity was affected, and the before/after state.
File
A digital artifact (e.g. document, image, data file) attached to exactly one owning entity for evidence, reference, or record-keeping purposes.
Regulatory Tag
A classification applied to entities (e.g. BSL, GMO, pathogen) used to drive compliance rules, checklist applicability, and authorization behavior.
Authorization Rule
A compliance rule that governs whether an action is allowed, requires approval, or is blocked based on compliance level, entity type, and action.
Sample Event
A timestamped record of a significant action or observation affecting a sample, such as transfers, contamination, harvesting, or state changes.
